Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal Breaks Champions League Record

March 13, 2026 2 days ago

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal made history on Tuesday as the youngest player to reach 30 appearances in the Champions League. This happened during Barcelona's Round of 16 first leg against Newcastle United.

To achieve the record, the 18-year-old winger scored a dramatic finish with a last-minute penalty kick in stoppage time, securing a 1-1 draw for Barcelona.

Yamal was 18 years and 240 days old, breaking the previous record held by Warren Zaïre-Emery, who achieved the feat at 19 years and 227 days old in October 2025.

There are many players, including Anderson, Cesc Fàbregas, Roque Santa Cruz, Jude Bellingham, Iker Casillas, and Kylian Mbappé, who reached 30 appearances before turning 21 years old but Yamal achieved the record before turning 19. He is the youngest to achieve 10, 20, and 30 appearances in the Champions League, making him a rising star in the football world.

Now, Yamal's next target is Jude Bellingham's 40 appearances, which the Real Madrid midfielder achieved at 21 years and 164 days old giving Yamal almost three years to achieve the record. With the new format of the Champions League, with 8 games played in the group stage as opposed to 6, the Barcelona winger is even expected to achieve more feats sooner than expected.

With the current pace, the Barcelona sensation might even break Lionel Messi's record for the youngest to reach 100 appearances, which the Argentine achieved at 28 years and 84 days old.
