Ethiopia Revokes Licenses of 52 Private Colleges in Major Quality Enforcement Drive

March 31, 2026 3 weeks ago

Ethiopia’s Education and Training Authority has revoked the operating licenses of 52 private higher education institutions, ordering their immediate closure after determining they failed to meet required regulatory and academic standards.

The decision follows a series of compliance warnings issued between October 2024 and January 2026. During this period, the institutions were instructed to complete mandatory re-registration processes and align with national quality benchmarks. According to the Authority, the affected colleges neither entered the re-registration system nor addressed identified deficiencies despite multiple written notices, phone calls, and formal summons.

In an official directive circulated to regional governments, city administrations, and law enforcement agencies, the regulator stated that the institutions continued operating without meeting minimum academic and procedural requirements. As a result, their legal status has now been formally terminated.

This action represents one of the most significant enforcement measures in Ethiopia’s private higher education sector, which has seen rapid expansion over the past two decades to accommodate increasing demand for tertiary education. However, this growth has also raised persistent concerns about inconsistent quality, weak regulatory oversight, and the credibility of qualifications issued by some institutions.

Authorities have urged students and parents to verify the accreditation status of institutions before enrolling, warning against engaging with unrecognized providers.

The list of affected institutions includes a range of colleges offering programs in business, technology, health sciences, and distance education across multiple regions of the country.
