FIFA Rejects Iran's Request to Move World Cup Matches to Mexico

March 17, 2026 3 months ago

FIFA is unlikely to Iran's request to relocate 2026 World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico, despite claims by Iran’s football federation that discussions are ongoing.

Iran is scheduled to play two matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle. However, their participation has come under scrutiny following recent U.S. airstrikes on the country carried out jointly with Israel. Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently warned that the “life and safety” of Iran’s players could be at risk if they travel to the United States prompting the Iranian Football Federation (IFF) to explore the possibility of moving matches to Mexico.

IFF president Mehdi Taj appeared to confirm the talks, stating on social media that negotiations were underway with FIFA to relocate Iran’s fixtures. However, sources within FIFA have downplayed the likelihood of any changes, citing logistical and commercial challenges. Tickets have already been sold, while global broadcast schedules and sponsorship agreements are in place making any late alterations highly disruptive.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has not issued a formal update since stating that Iran would be “welcome” at the tournament following discussions at the White House.

The current stance of the governing body wants Iran to participate and final decision is unlikely before FIFA’s Congress in Vancouver on April 30. If Iran withdraws, FIFA would decide on a replacement potentially marking the first World Cup withdrawal after the tournament draw since 1950. Iraq, currently the next highest-ranked Asian team but not yet qualified, could be in line to step in depending on upcoming playoff results.

Iran is set to face Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand in Group G and if they finish as runners-up, they could potentially meet the United States in the Round of 32 in Dallas.
