Ghana’s President Mahama Seeks Russian Investment at Moscow Forum
During a high‑profile gathering in Moscow, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo‑Addo engaged Russian firms in a bid to secure investment for the West African nation.
The Russia‑Africa Forum, held in late February 2023, brought together leaders and business representatives from 54 African countries and 15 Russian companies. Ghana, a key partner in the African Continental Free Trade Area, used the platform to showcase opportunities in its growing infrastructure, energy and agricultural sectors.
Analysts note that Russia’s interest in Africa stems from a strategic pivot to diversify its economic partnerships amid Western sanctions. Ghana’s president highlighted potential joint ventures in renewable energy, mining and logistics, aiming to tap Russia’s expertise in heavy industry and technology.
For Ethiopia, the forum signals a broader shift in African‑Russian relations. The country’s own energy ambitions, particularly in hydropower and solar projects, could benefit from Russian technology and financing. Moreover, Ethiopia’s position as a regional logistics hub may attract Russian interest in rail and port development.
Looking ahead, observers will watch for concrete agreements signed in the coming months. Ethiopia’s government has expressed openness to foreign investment, and the success of Ghana’s outreach may encourage other African states to pursue similar partnerships. Key indicators will include the signing of memoranda of understanding, the initiation of feasibility studies, and the flow of capital into African infrastructure projects.
