OpenAI to Retire Older ChatGPT Models January 29, 2026

OpenAI has announced that GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini will be retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, alongside previously planned changes to GPT-5 models.

The company said the decision follows a major shift in user behavior, with most users now choosing GPT-5.2, while only 0.1% continue using GPT-4o.

OpenAI added that feedback from users helped improve newer models with better personality, creativity, and customization options.

API access for developers will remain unchanged for now.

OpenAI stated that retiring older models allows it to focus on improving newer AI systems and expanding user choice and safety features.
