Saudi Star Rice Project in Gambella Slows, Authorities Call for Action
Investment activity by Saudi Star Agricultural Development PLC, part of the MIDROC Investment Group, has slowed in Ethiopia’s Gambella region, raising concerns among local authorities.
Regional officials highlighted Gambella’s strong agricultural potential, noting that over 55,000 hectares of land have been prepared for investors.
Lou Obup Opiew, Anyuak community representative and royal advisor, said the project, which spans over 14,000 hectares along the Alwero River, has not met initial expectations despite significant investment in irrigation and machinery.
Jemal Ahmed, CEO of MIDROC Investment Group, also acknowledged the slowdown citing environmental challenges including irregular rainfall, moisture shortages, and crop damage from migratory birds, as well as workforce constraints.
The company is now reviewing its strategy, with plans to adopt improved farming technologies and revive operations.
